Elephant carved from Rose Quartz

So What is Rose Quartz?

Quartz is one of the most common minerals found in the Earth’s crust and rose quartz is a particularly attractive macrocrystalline variety that ranges in colour from pale pink to rose red and has a gemstone hardness of 7. The pink hue of rose quartz is thought to be due to the presence of small trace of manganese, iron or titanium within the stone, although how it gets its colour is still not perfectly understood. Some rose quartz gemstones show a star-effect, known as an asterism, which is caused by the presence of rutile needles in the crystal, rutile being a mineral that is mainly composed of titanium dioxide. More rarely, it is found in a crystal form called pink quartz, with the pink colouration being caused by tiny amounts of phosphate or aluminium. The first rose quartz crystal to be found came from Rumford in Maine. This attractive semi-precious stone normally occurs as solid masses in the cores of large pegmatites, which are intrusive, coarse-grained igneous rocks like granite, and sometimes are found in huge hydrothermal veins.

Where Does Rose Quartz Come From?

Rose quartz is found in several locations around the world, including Brazil, Madagascar, Spain, Scotland and the United States. Most of the rose quartz that you can buy today comes from the Minas Gerais region of Brazil, but it is also commercially mined in India, South Africa, Namibia, and Germany. The star rose quartz crystals are most often found in Madagascar, Dakota and Vietnam.

History of Rose Quartz

Rose quartz has been prized as a gemstone since antiquity, and indeed the word quartz comes from the Saxon ‘querklufterz’ which means cross vein ore. This enormous pink gemstone is 5,500 carats and is a spherical cabochon-cut which shows off the distinct rays of the star. Unlike other famous gemstones, this beautiful stone does not yet have a name, but it does have good translucency and an amazing warm pink hue. This unique piece of rose quartz is mounted on a sculpture in silver that was executed by John Marshall, a Seattle-based silversmith. There is also another very large and beautiful rose quartz crystal, weighing 1438 carats, in the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
