And The Old Year Is Dying
62And The Old Year Is Dying
And the old year is dying
As once more the sun stands still in the sky
Offering only darkness
Where once it spilled its generous golden light
And far below we watch with bated breath
Building our fires ever larger
Hoping that the year will turn once more
And the sun resume its stately procession across our skies
Or is this the year that will never come to birth
Stuck forever in the shadows and blackness of deepest night?
Keep your faithful watch in the hushed darkness
Listen for the whisper, the faintest promise of light
This is the time of year when it feels as though the world has stood still. In the northern hemisphere for a few days after the Winter Solstice on December 21st the sun looks like it is standing still in the sky. This stillness used to fill our ancestors with fear and dread, as they desperately needed the sun to start moving again so that it would return to warm the land once more, allowing their crops to grow and the animals that they hunted to breed. They filled these days of darkness with festivals of light, building huge bonfires on hilltops, feasting and filling their homes with fragrant evergreens.
This year, the end of 2011, is especially poignant for us all as the coming New Year of 2012 is thought to either herald a wonderful new age of increased peace and spirituality or a period of great destruction and the end of the world. Many people point to the Mayan Calendar, which ends in 2012, as a sign that mankind is potentially doomed with 21st December 2012 as being an especially fateful date.
So as you are raising your glasses to toast in this momentous New Year and make your resolutions, think of how you would like 2012 to unfold and choose accordingly. For if our world is to be a peaceful one, then each of us needs to find the peace within ourselves. If we want to help to usher in a new age of light, then we must expand that little spark of light that shines within each of us, until the whole world is illuminated with peace and joy.

How is New Year celebrated in Great Britain? Many of the traditions of New Year's Eve date from pagan times, from the old fire rituals of the Celts. Hogmanay in Scotland is the biggest celebration in the United kingdom, with it's traditions of First

Ah what perfect synchronicity it is to read this beautiful poem on one of the first days of gorgeous sunshine here in the UK, spring has come early or at least has arrived early to herald in the summer solstice and what we have to look forward too.
It is on a galactic level to be an interesting time, as we near the completion of the Age of Pisces and will pass into the golden Age of Aquarius, what can we expect?
Well it’s a Golden Age and that is a great sign for the coming times, voted up awesome.
very beautiful poem CMHypno.Every word of poem is telling its own meaning. You have chosen a very nice subject for hub.Voted up.
A great poem followed by some thought provoking facts. I hope that 2012 will see a big change, as after the last few years of governments fighting 'terrorism', removing personal rights and the destruction of countries in its name, combined with the economic crisis worldwide, we could definitely do with an upturn of events!
SOCIALLY SHARED and voted up.

Hi, this was lovely, I know what you mean about that time of the year, I totally understand why so many people in years gone by lit fires and did everything they could to bring the sun back, hopefully now we are way on our way to spring! no, hold on, they just said it might snow in a couple of weeks! lol!
I love it! Thank you for this wonderful message to kick off the new year. I hope 2012 is kind to you. Your Hub is excellent. :-)
Happy New Year to you CM. Lets keep thought our emanations on a wonderful new age regardless of anything else. CM your a talented bard, do write some more for us this in 2012.
What a beautiful poem and hub! When you look at the sun and sky at the moment it's understandable why our ancestors would be nervous and would have rituals to try and ensure that everything, especially the sun, returned to normal!
If everyone of us could find that little sun in us and increase it's strength just a little, then I think 2012 could herald the new era of transition rather than destruction. And maybe your wonderful hub will help many of us to begin to increase our inner light!
Voted up + beautiful!
This poetry was so sincere, CM, I hope we won't have to wait 35 years for your next poem. Happy New Year to you.
This is a beautiful poem and hub, CMHypno, and gives a vivid description of what the winter solstice meant to our ancestors. It's a wonderful hub to read on New Year's Eve. Thank you for sharing.
I like this poem. Lovely picture as well. So true, we're on a precipice. I always hope for peace to prevail.
LOVELY HUB ! You are quite right, it is up to all of us to follow the path of peace- although the worlds governments might take some convincing on that!
